A society in which mental health is no longer stigmatized, quality treatment is available for all, support and services are accessible and affordable for all and mandatory mental health education is implemented in the school systems.
Joshua's Joy's mission is to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness thus empowering those in need to seek the help they require. We also serve as an advocate of all mental health issues including availability of quality care, affordable and accessible treatment options, and family member support services.
Joshua's Joy is funded by the generous donations of its supporters. As a registered 501(c)3 organization; all donations are completely tax-deductible. There is no amount too small. We appreciate all tokens of love! Thank you for your continued support.
Nelson Mandela said EDUCATION is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. The only way to effectively stop the stigma associated with mental illness is through education. Mental illness education must be a component of the core curriculum requirement for high school graduation. Additionally, mental health instruction should begin at the elementary level and continue through high school. Joshua's Joy is committed to working with elected and school officials to implement mental illness awareness courses and programs.
Educating the community is also essential to stopping the stigma associated with mental illness. Joshua's Joy engages the community in a number of ways, including but not limited to community canvassing, informational advertising, outreach programs and Mental Health Mondays, which involves distributing educational flyers throughout a selected city.
One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome in the fight against mental illness is locating quality treatment options. Due to the stigma, many people are completely resistant to seeking a diagnosis for their disorder. Some may want help, but are uncomfortable going to see a therapist. Others may not have any idea how to go about seeking treatment
Joshua's Joy provides referrals to online therapists and counselors. Being treated from the comfort of your own home mitigates the stigma associated with treatment. Online therapy eliminates the discomfort associated with an in-office visit and allows people to locate quality treatment from anywhere in the world.
If you are unable to locate a provider or requires additional assistance, PLEASE contact Joshua's Joy directly and an ambassador will personally work with them to find a viable solution.
Supporting a loved one with a mental illness can be completely overwhelming. You are often unaware of the severity of the disorder. There's also a tendency to downplay or dismiss signs and symptoms. It's difficult to accept that your loved one may be suffering from a mental disorder. In fact, your loved one may not be able to recognize or accept their mental illness, thus refusing treatment.
Even if your loved one agrees to get help, family members face a new set of challenges. Many times your loved one will refuse to take their prescribed medication because they don't like the way it makes them feel. In other instances, people stop taking medicine once they feel better because they take their wellness as an indication that they no longer need their medicine. Dealing with loved ones who suffer from mental illness can be traumatic. It can be physically, emotionally and mentally draining. But YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There are people in place to support you and your mental health. Don't be afraid to reach out for help.
Your mental health matters too!
The mental health system currently in place is in desperate need of improvement. Quality, affordable treatment options are often difficult to navigate. Finding the right therapist is typically a matter of trial and error. Clients who require inpatient treatment are often subjected to inhumane conditions and may not recieve adequate care. Joshua Joy's is committed to ensuring quality, affordable care is available to all who need it.
Typically, police are not equipped to deal with mental health crises. Consequently, those experiencing a psychotic crisis have a greater chance of being injured or killed when the police intervene. Joshua's Joy is working to implement a mental health emergency line, much like 911 only for psychiatric crises. Instead of police officers, trained interventionists would respond thus mitigating the possibility of injury or death.
Although there is a high correlation between gun-related deaths and mental illness, there are too few safeguards in place to prevent someone who is mentally unstable from obtaining a license to carry. Joshua's Joy is working to ensure a complete psychological evaluation is required for each appilicant
